India won the toss and chose to bat first as the weather remained nice and sunny in the minutes leading up to the start of the match. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have opened for India, Rohit eventually became the second fastest batter to 10,000 ODI runs in typical fashion, hitting a six over the bowler's head with a sumptuous shot. He also surpassed Shahid Afridi's record for most sixes in the Asia Cup.

India lost their first wicket in the 12th over with Wellalage dismissing Shubman Gill with his first ball of the match. He then dismissed Virat Kohli, thus denying the former India captain a fifth consecutive century at the R Premadasa Stadium.

Wellalage then sent back the regal-looking Rohit, thus turning the game on its head. KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan then slowed the pace of the innings down and patiently made their way through the spin overs, eventually putting up a 50-run partnership.

However, Wellalage returned and took his fourth wicket, dismissing Rahul for 39 off 44. India unravelled quickly after that and Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj were looking to keep the last wicket intact when rain came along and interrupted match after the 47th over.

But after adding a crucial 27-run stand, the final wicket fell with 5 balls left in the innings.
