Arsenal rebuilt with Champions League in mind, Arteta says

Arsenal are turning into the team which could regularly challenge Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City juggernaut, both domestically and in Europe.

Last season saw Mikel Arteta lead the Gunners to their finest Premier League finish since the 2015/2016 campaign, when Arsene Wenger was still in charge, securing second place and Champions League qualification.

This return to prominence will bring its own challenges for the Spaniard. Not only will the pressure to win more trophies increase but other teams will begin to target Arsenal in the same way they target City in the hopes of securing a major scalp.

Have Arsenal strengthened since last season?

Their newfound status as one of the favorites to win their first title in 20 years is reflected in the Premier League betting odds where the North Londoners are currently +500 to claim the trophy that has eluded them for so long.

Arteta has used the summer transfer window to sign some new players for his side. This will not only will give him some much-needed strength in depth but also add quality that will improve the starting XI.

Three players have arrived so far and Arteta has spent a total of £208m in the process of bolstering his squad, eclipsing their previous highest total of £156.8m from the summer of 2021.

These three players arguably bolster the spine of Arteta’s team and it proves that he means business heading into the season, aiming to go one step better than last term.

Can Arsenal get the better of Manchester City this season?

There is no doubt that Guardiola has amassed one of the greatest Premier League teams of all time, especially with their treble-winning season in 2022/23.

The former Barcelona manager became the first boss to claim three successive league titles since Sir Alex Ferguson between 2007-2009 and Arteta will need to outthink his former mentor to derail their hopes of winning four titles in a row. The key challenge for the 41-year-old this season will be making sure his team takes maximum points from the rest of the top four.

During 2022/23, Arsenal claimed just seven points out of a possible 18 against City, Manchester United, and Newcastle United, which proved to be a key factor in where the league trophy ended up. In comparison, the champions only dropped five points against the other three teams who finished in the top four, showing their superiority.

Is Mikel Arteta the man to steer Arsenal to glory?

The simple answer is yes. He has recruited well and many forget he has actually lifted silverware with the club already, winning the FA Cup in 2020.

This experience will stand him in good stead ahead of another title bid and although Champions League football is gracing the Emirates for the first time since 2016/17, there is no doubt where the priorities lie.

If Arteta can get his new signings to gel immediately and make a positive start while managing a hectic schedule, Arsenal can certainly go all the way and secure their 14th league title.
